Folie À Plusieurs — Looking for Langston
Eau de Parfum
Notes of mourning and celebration.
Looking for Langston by Isaac Julien. An olfactive response to the film, a lyrical exploration - and recreation - of the private world of poet, novelist and playwright Langston Hughes (1902 - 1967) and his fellow black artists from the Harlem Renaissance, exploring themes of race, class, black sexuality and a discourse on interracial desire.
“On me, it starts out being a big explosion of what I pick up as castoreum, civet, petroleum (think Knize Ten), and leather. Then it opens up with some indolic jasmine, white florals, musk, spices, and some slight ashy notes. And while these notes can sometimes be loud and obnoxious, I think the whole perfume has been handled with care. It’s very smooth, and it’s not “beat you over the head” loud. It doesn’t feel synthetic, and retains good airy-ness while still being dark and heavy. This doesn’t mean it’s soft though. Longevity and sillage are very good. Overall I find this to be quite sophisticated, while maintaining a daring quality.” — boui_boui, Basenotes
