In my mind, one of Zernell’s greatest gifts to the world of fragrance is his sophisticated approach to fruit. I can only hope that critics take note of the complexity and delicacy with which he handles these materials. In Hip Hop, the ripe red of black currant is accentuated by labdanum and green notes that carry the wear on my skin into a slightly spiky territory. Like a tight hi hat, sampled and slightly swung. Pulling behind the beat just a bit, the effect is lively movement with almost minty edges against a backdrop of cacao, white musk and dark chocolate. Punchy, harmonic, aquatic overtones ripple with surprising longevity throughout the day, carried by the extremely soft and smooth hum of the base (bass). Here the notes are truly suboctave. Deep and full.
